From the Narrow place I called out to God
who answered me with the Divine Expanse. (Psalm 118:5)
Translated/Interpreted by Rabbi Shefa Gold

There is nothing normal about me. In fact, I fit no where, but find my place in nearly every space I choose to go. In many ways this is gift and yet I find myself bound by the world I am building and the sacred space I am craving.

Here is the the thing, as we move into 5779 (the Jewish New Year), I am profoundly aware that I have little to say to those that believe in Trump or believe in Israel’s current government. I have no patience for those that stand in a world that does not consider “others”. I find the people that want to build walls to be deplorable at best.

Day 29 - Build BridgesAnd yet, I know all of us need to find a way to meet in the middle if we are to build a world with more love and less hate.

I am struggling – really struggling.

There must be something beyond the dysfunction of our world. There is so much work to be done, but it isn’t going to happen if we don’t find some middle ground or build at least a few bridges.

Today I am finding myself looking deep into my soul and hoping that I can find the inner strength to build bridges in all areas of my life. While politics may feel the most daunting right now, they are also a symptom of my spirit not being as grounded as it needs to be.

May this year be a year for building bridges and crossing the insurmountable divides.

Onward with love, light, & authenticity,
Chava

Day 28 - HineiniNearly every day, I take time to go inward through my journaling, meditation, and chanting practices, I often focus on remaining present. Breathing deeply, focusing inward, and ultimately figuring out where I am truly meant to be. This isn’t always easy because in truth I am also a bit scattered.

With Rosh HaShana on the horizon, this reflection seems more poignant than ever. Learning from those moments that I allow myself to go inward, I know that I need to navigate my life differently then I did this past year so . The goal is to ultimately show up for others as needed, but also honor my own needs.  It’s time for me to prioritize all the moving parts of my life while also creating boundaries around the things that I hold sacred.

May I always be present – not only for my family, my friends, and my world, but also for myself.

Hineini. Here I am. I am present. I am exactly where I should be.

Onward with love, light, & authenticity,
Chava

Deep sigh.

I’ve been wondering lately how to navigate life authentically. Today I believed I failed. I lacked the character that would allow me to shine in my true light and be truly honest.

Authenticity is a value that I hold deeply. And yet, sometimes I can’t show up fully. Maybe it is the responsibility I hold as a Jewish educator,  a mother, an activist and/or a friend.

There are lies that I live. How horrible is that? I am silenced by my roles and yet I do know that my voice matters.

Still, I am not alone when I say that I fear the power of my voice. Katy Perry has a beautiful song ‘Roar’.  It is an anthem to the type of woman I want to be.

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter
Dancing through the fire
‘Cause I am a champion, and you’re gonna hear me roar

Day 26 - Embrace Authenticity, Embrace DarknessMay I always show up and embrace the authenticity and the darkness that sometimes envelopes my spirit. Only then will I be able to use my power to impact the world.

Embracing my darkness and my authenticity is the only way I may emerge and ultimately shine my light.

May we all keep moving forward!

Onward with love, light, & authenticity,
Chava

“Almost all creativity involves purposeful play.” –  Abraham Maslow

Life works in mysterious ways. Creativity courses though my veins; it’s in my blood. And yet, I never seem to be able to play enough.

Day 25 - Play morePerhaps it is time for me to reconsider things and see Abraham Maslow’s point that “almost all creativity involves purposeful play”. That would make me feel a whole lot better about my lack of playing.

None of us can accomplish making a difference in our world without being creative and taking care of ourselves.

Perhaps we all need to play more. 🙂

Just thinking out loud.

Life is full of opportunities for us to stay engaged. Texts often come at a breakneck speed. Emails offer us a chance to make purchases, support important causes, and connect to family, friends, and work too. And then there is social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc.); some of us use it to stay in the loop professionally, socially, or both. We are incessantly being called to stay engaged with our family, our community, and our work.

My guess is that I am not alone in how I am feeling and seeing things.

Day 24 - Do the next right or best thingWith so much noise surrounding us, we have to remember that we can’t do it all. For me, I am learning to prioritize and simply do the next right or best thing. Since I can’t possibly do it all. AND most importantly, I am learning that self-care needs to be a priority if I am going to be able to accomplish much of what calls to me.

Remember, I can’t do it all and neither can you, but we can all do the next right or best thing. And maybe then will we find empowering ways to make a difference for good.

Onward with love, light, & action,
Chava

There is a good chance that you navigate life with a little more ease than I do. And there is equally a chance that you can totally relate to what I am about ready to share.

DRUM-ROLL PLEASE

Have you ever put off for tomorrow (or next week, next month, next year) what you can do today? I know I have! In fact, today I realized how out of control I have gotten. This isn’t a good thing. . . not at all.

Day 23 - Just Do ItInstead of taking time to lament about how guilty and dysfunctional I was feeling, I decided to simple start doing the next right thing. And the results have totally been impacting my afternoon in empowering ways.  I am now feeling so much more positive about myself and hopefully making a difference too.  Here are just a few things that I have done over the last few hours including:

  1. organized my magazines meant for vision board workshops. (Translation: Magazines are now out of the middle of my ‘Creativity Cave’ and put into new plastic bins.)
  2. called and scheduled giving Judaic ritual objects to three different families. I am still waiting to hear from about four other families. (I have a small nonprofit called Door l’Door which gives Judaic ritual objects to people who’s homes were devastated by natural disasters.)
  3. worked for about five hours for my job.
  4. started learning Yom Kippur’s Torah reading.
  5. put a new picture on my wall.
  6. connected with a close friend. . .it had been way too long.
  7. left a message for someone who wants me to share Door l’Door with a group of 30 people in the early winter.
  8. scheduled two phone meetings for tomorrow about Project Lifeline, an action that will hopefully help children being held in detention centers near McAllen, Texas.
  9. took a long walk even though I was expecting the skies to open up. AND they did!
  10. prepared three packages to be mailed in the morning.

Sometimes you have to one step and then another; once you start, you will find your rhythm.  I am feeling so grateful because that is exactly what happened today.

Hineini, Here I am!!!

Onward with love, light, & action,
Chava

Life isn’t easy. There is so much that we are handling at any given moment. The world is feeling daunting in this moment . . .  politics, family, internal strife, unwanted deadlines, loneliness, hurdles. Even the good stuff like the work, Jewish holidays, time to walk, and loved ones can be daunting. Life is what it is and I am always navigating my spirit’s intensity.

Day 22 - Be Open to possibilitiesWhile I may sometimes want to hide in a cocoon, it behooves me to keep showing up and seek out the possibilities. The world is calling to me with open hands or maybe just open windows.

Exploring the world, meeting people where they are, fully connecting with old and new friends, embracing new ideas, playing at every chance – these are the ways that our potentials will soar.

Take a deep breath and join me in open your hearts to possibilities! I am on it! Are you?

Together we can make a world that makes us proud.

Onward with love, light, & action,
Chava
